The Californian Steve Rossé joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra by international audition in 1990. He has since performed with the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Boston Symphony Orchestras as a guest or substitute. In 2018 he served as (temporary) Principal Tuba of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, which he successfully auditioned for at the age of 50. Prior to joining the SSO in 1990, Steve served as Principal Tuba with the New Mexico Symphony (Albuquerque, USA), and the RAI Torino Radio Symphony Orchestra in Italy. His primary teachers include Brent Dutton as a high school student, Daniel Perantoni at Arizona State University, Roger Bobo, and Arnold Jacobs.
Steve is perhaps best known as the creator and director of TubaMania, which has been head
spearing global tuba and low brass activities since 1995. Since late 2020, TubaMania (www.tubamania.com) has attracted over a thousand online webinar attendees and has
featured dozens of the world’s greatest authorities in tuba and low brass as part of its TubaMania Online webinar series, and these events are ongoing.
Steve has been on the music faculty at the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music for
nearly thirty years, and from 2015-2019 was Assistant Professor at Zurich’s ZHdK, teaching with Anne Jelle Visser. Dozens of Steve’s former fulltime students now occupy major orchestral positions around the world, as well as nearly every tuba seat in Australia’s professional military bands, and some have won first prizes in prestigious international solo competitions such as Jeju and ITEC. Steve has commissioned and recorded many new solo works for tuba and brass, most are published and are available on YouTube, including some innovative collaborations with Sergio Carolino and Roland Szentpali.
